It was a folder permissions problem. I don't remember changing it, but the networked environment
I use can play tricks with the OS.

  One last thing, you didnt mention changing the location of your geardata folder. Did you check where options was pointing? Did you create a folder on the desktop called GearData and point the program to it?  this is important as its the only file check I can see and if your data folder is in a protected area youll always fail this check...

I understand the frustration. Makes me want to scream at times myself. This
is an odd one. The really strange thing about it is that the licence is only checked
when you try to save something or output something, so I cant imagine why it would
happen when placing a gear..

  So is it just gears, how about pulleys? Does turning off spokes help? Im wondering if its pointing
to some spoke that doesn't exist perhaps..What about if you dont try to place a pulley, what if you
instead use the boxing tab and check the box for front. Does a front plate appear? Is there anything strange about how it occurs that might point me in a direction?
  What about a bearing, they actually get created when using the tab itself, does it error out..how
about f you try to place a bearing..

Im sure we can figure it out.. just a matter of data..

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have tried all of the above now.

1. Made a directory called "TempData". No difference.
2. Re-installed the vcredist_x86 and let it repair. No difference.
3. Uninstalled vcredist_x86, then re-installed it. No difference.
4. Deleted everything to do with gearotic; reinstalled. No difference.

aaarrrrggghhhh!

  Ive tried deleting my folders and resinstalling but I cannot reproduce this one.
It may be related to the runtime files, can you try rerunning the vcredist_x86.exe and see
its repair function fixes this error. the program doesnt check anything license related when placing a
gear so Im a bit confused as to why this might happen.
   

  Has anyone else seen this error?

  hmmm. Is there a folder named TempData in your GM folder? If not can you make one and see if it helps. Ill investigate and see why it might not have been made..

Hi Art,
I just installed the new version from the "beta" installer. When I copy my license files into the install directory and try to "add wheel to proj" I
get an error message proclaiming "an unnamed file was not found" and no gear is placed. If I delete my license files, it will place the gear
but gives me the standard message about saving stuff is limited for the trial version.
Help!?!?!
