Re: Help with Clock Mechanics

NAWCC has a great pendulum calculator at https://theindex.nawcc.org/CalcPendulumLength.php

It allows you to enter the number of gear teeth between the minute hand and the escapement to determine the pendulum length.

Re: 3d printed gears question.

I 3D print many clock gears with good results. No raft or brim. Use elephant foot compensation so the bottom surface is good. Otherwise, you may need to spend a few minutes per gear filing off the elephant foot.

Good god, thats way better than I figured on top of head. Thats a long time to degrade ..

Art

It was much longer than I expected as well, especially since they were random no-name bearings.

A pendulum degrading in 24 ...

Re: Kinetic sculpture designed by Clayton Boyer

I have been testing various bearing configurations for pendulum supports. It is not exactly the same setup as a kinetic sculpture, but I believe some of the same principles apply. Less friction is better.

The load is around 8 ounces. I measure the time that it takes for the swing to degrade from ...

Re: Does SCALE matter?

It sounds like a really cool project.  Please post pictures when you get it completed.

As a general rule, scale does not matter.  A 10 dot pitch gear can be scaled up by 10X to become a 1DP gear.  The proportions stay the same.

You have additional flexibility to scale ...

Re: Club Footed Escapement

What features of the club foot do you find to be the most important?  Most of the designs I see have long skinny "legs" that would be very weak in a wood clock.  It may work great in brass though.

I have been experimenting with 3D printed clocks and found that the traditional deadbeat ...

Re: Anyone made wood gear clock with electric clock motor?

Tmasters, not sure if you are still interested, but here is some info that I have discovered.

I have been running some of the cheap microwave synchronous motors for several months.  They are rated at 4W and get quite warm.  They still produce plenty of torque at half the rated voltage, so ...

Re: New here, looking forward to it!

Welcome to the club.

I started with woodworking, then CNC, followed by a 3D printer. My passion is clocks.

3D printers appear to be a game changer with their capabilities at such a low price. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3524448 is my design that started from Gearotic. There are many other ...

Re: fancy gears

90 hours is the total print time.  The largest component is the weight shell at 17 hours.  Each half of the frame is around 12 hours.  Most of the rest are under 2 hours unless grouping multiple items.  I trust the Prusa enough to start a job in the evening that will run ...

Re: fancy gears

Wipe before infill looks like a good option.  I am using PrusaSlicer, but it might have a different name.  I will search for it.

The biggest advantages with fancy gears is additional clearance with low tooth count pinions.  My last clock uses 12 tooth pinions.  This increases ...
