Ed;

Remove the vanes and start with just a pound or so, you shoudl be able to make the control arm swing back and forth a few turns..
Move up from there..

Hi Art,
I am getting ready to build a Scimitar.  I would like to be able to change some of the parameters of the gears - specifically the the shaft sizes.  Did you post the .gth file?  I can probably reverse engineer the project to my own specifications but the .gth file would make it much easier.  If that doesn't work for you I can use the files you already posted.

First Ticker

Post by Metager [Bot] »

Art,

I finally had time yesterday to get most of a Scimitar cut and assembled.
It was fun and seems to run well.

Thank you very much for the plans.
When I get ti completed I will post another clip
I build things like this for my Boy Scout troops fundraiser.
If past history holds it should sell at the auction for $500 or so.
My guess is the Bat would be upward of $800.

Every year there are always two or three people who ask me to make additional units.  But never offer even half the sell price.
Good thing I am not in it for the money.

I generally try to follow the recipe the first time out.
Art was correct that one you understand how they function it is pretty straight forward on the design.
If the pesky customers will leave me alone maybe I will complete a tickers of my own design.

That is excellent. I think you guys went the smart route, build one so you fully understand the process, then get artistic.
I cant tell you how flattering it is to see duplicates of my living room wall on youtube. lol Keep up the great work.

Hi Art,
Here's my go at a ticker.  I've used the dimensions of Scimitar with respect to the gears and the ratchet mechanism.
I don't use bearings just steel on wood and I usually use 1/8" shafts.
All the parts are cut from 1/4" baltic birch and the visual part is just a simple interference pattern from 10" toothless wheels.  It works great on the test bench.

I had to clean (snow blow) about 1 Km of road to get to my CNC which is at the summer cottage where my CNC lives but it was worth the effort.

The Ticker is certainly not finished as the back is just solid wood and that will change in the future but my time has run out.

When finished it will be a shelf unit - no wall space left.
