The Status bar is always dark gray and doesn't show anything... ever

I have the status bar enabled (clicking from the top menu - left side) and it shows a long gray strip at the bottom of the screen.
But no status is ever shown.  It just takes up screen space. .Is it working?

As yet, that bar is unused, it will be turned on in the fall for information displays when working with toolpaths.
