Art,

That is GREAT.  I'm building a CNC router and I've spent the last couple of weeks looking for software that will do exactly this without costing an arm and a leg.

I'm building a grandfather clock for my daughter, who is a veterinarian.  I want to make some raised panels for the base that have her dogs and cats on them.  This is just what I'm looking for.

Not to give you ideas, but I think you could sell this under a separate title.  Based on what I've found, or haven't found, I think there would be a big demand.

I'm going to be away from the internet for the next five or six weeks.
Do you think you could have it done by then?

Just kidding....I can't wait.

Actually, I guess I can,
Steve Fox

Hi Steve:

You may have trouble getting the cats and dogs to sit still... lol

I have researched this type of technology because of personal interest, Im amazed there arent more
of them out there to play with. There are a few papers describing how to do it , though I have only begun
to play in this, so my code is pretty slow. It does require a live subject though , the webcam takes 3 shots quickly
with the monitor playing a pattern. so the object has to stay still for at least  0.25 seconds or so.. and up to 1 second
for some webcams..
It will be added to gearotic if it proves itself usefull.... hard to say though, this is all finicky stuf...

Art,

I know I can get them to sit still that long individually, but it may be difficult in multiples.
She has taken several pictures of them all, but not arranged the way she wants.  I have no problem breaking them up.

She got married in October and her husband is a vet, also.
Between them, they have three dogs and two cats.

If you consider this a vote, that makes two.  You have to count the other post, too.  Keep up the good work.

I have to say, this was by far the best software purchase I have ever made.
I bought this to make some replacement gears for my old Atlas lathe.
Next was wooden gears for clocks, still working on that.  Now this.
It just gets better and better.

Thank you,
Steve Fox

Thank you Steve,

One of the most gratifying things about developing Gearotic..is the responce of the people who use it.

Art,
I never really thought that I'd have a use for a webcam. Now I gotta find a good one soon.

This looks like it could be a great tool for lithophanes; it'll be fun to try and see if that's true.  There's a bit of a lithophane mini-resurgence on thingiverse, not as good as the routed versions but still decent.

The standard image to gcode programs don't always do a very good job on relief carving from normal 2D pictures!  Looks handy for 3D printing, and you could add them to gears instead of spokes :)

Have you seen Autodesk's 123D Catch?

Is this what you do on your summers (used loosely, still snow here) off?

Kirk

Hi:

I wouldnt worry too much as yet, this is just stuff I do when Im on vacation, when it works out I include it in Gearotic, when it doesnt it
remains in my scrap heap to revisit. I started this one a couepl years back, this is just a revisit. It may happen this time, but you just
never know till you get there. It does make some strange lithophane type outputs.. but it needs work.. Im not convinced a monitor is bright enough.. or maybe its just mine... :)
