David C. Roy's Monarch II

I am in the process of building my version of Monarch II. I think I have figured out the pawl that holds the wind (torsion spring to keep the pawl on the pin to keep the spring from unwinding, but still allow it to allow winding). My problem is I can't figure out how the 2nd pawl works to release the 1st pawl. Can anyone help?

  Those mechanisms are buggers arent they? Almost as hard to design as explain what your looking for..

When I did the Bat, I used a magnet .. but Im thinking its almost time to do Bat with no magnet to trip the trigger,,,

Cant answer your question though... It'd take study and guessng at this point.. :)

Art,

I was thinking that it had to be a magnet that Roy used. It's a lot more obvious on Monarch I (I believe), by the way the pawl "jumps", but I could be wrong.

Hi:

I  dont think it is.. I did sit down and come up with the solution, but the damn things are so tricky Ive since forgotten it...
Ill have to reinvestigate when I build the next one.. Im trying to wait till GT has CAD that can draw it and explain its operation..

Take a look at this video...you can see the 4 Pawls...and how they are balanced....catch, released and centrifugal force?? makes them catch on the long brass rod....

Also shows the constant force spring "motor"...

Very simple... but like everything...its  the fine  details that allow it to work properly..

Hi Dale,
I think if you look very closely - the reverse rotation of the outer wheel will catch on a pawl and cause enough counter rotation for the "top" pawl to release from its pin.  The spring can now impart rotation to the outer wheel.  When the wheel rotates enough for the pin at the top to catch the pawl it releases the pin on the wheel and let it spin.  The whole thing then works on gravity putting the pawls in a position to catch on the "reversing" rotation and held against the driving pin by friction until that friction is released when the second pin is hit.

Exactly...great description....

I am working on this mechanism a we speak...designed in Cut2D...cut on my 48x96 CNC router

Have cut out and assembled all the parts....using a weight to power it..so far it is working perfectly ..

I think this will visually help you. No, I did not create it but another guy did and was selfless with sharing it so its the least I can do to pass it on.
